PENTAX camera coming summer ’24 will be half-frame!

By Marwan El Mozayen

I have known since December of 2023 (but was not allowed to disclose) that the new Ricoh PENTAX film camera will be a half-frame format — I saw the prototype! And now we can come out with some details: the latest PENTAX update.

(For our native German speakers: Eine wortwörtliche Übersetzung der PENTAX-Pressemitteilung finden Sie am Ende dieses Textes.)

We have been as antsy as a kid waiting for the bathroom, impatient to share the news that the new Pentax camera will make half-frame photos. Why is that so exciting?

  1. It shows that PENTAX is thinking of today’s users, providing a way to get the most images per roll and reducing film and development costs.
  2. The format is a cool 3:2 aspect ratio which is what many modern users are used to framing.
  3. The camera won’t be in direct competition to either the Leica M6 or the new Widelux but will rather broaden the range of possibilities for film shooters who would like to buy a brand-new camera.

Regarding point 1 above, we got firsthand confirmation of the fact that Ricoh PENTAX is really looking to serve today’s film shooters. As we report in Issue #22 of SilvergrainClassics, my colleague Doug Richardson and I got to meet TKO in Hamburg at Khrome. Both TKO and Ricoh representative Ryoko Shimamoto made a point of asking for our opinions about what the film photography community needs; this wasn’t polite chitchat, either. They were listening intently, taking note.

The other thing we have been itching to share is how soon this camera may be hitting shelves — SUMMER 2024! Just a few more months!

Film shooters know that there are lots of reasons to be excited about new film cameras coming onto the market. But some don’t appreciate how worried insiders have been about the lack of functioning film cameras that was projected to befall us in the coming decades. Thank goodness for initiatives like the one from Ricoh PENTAX!
