I took these photos on 35mm Ilford HP5+ and FP4+ which I then developed and scanned at home. The photos were taken with a Canon Eos 500 camera and 50mm lens in Stockholm between March and April this year when the coronavirus pandemic was accelerating in Europe.

I took these photos on walks I took after having to travel home due to the pandemic from the UK where I was studying. During this time I was feeling shocked by how much my life had been changed in a short space of time, going from studying in person to online and feeling both mentally and physically distanced from my surroundings.

The photograph of a reflection in a supermarket ceiling mirror is important to me as a way of representing my experience of this spring. I am in the reflection pressing the shutter of my camera and surrounded by shelves of items and at the same time the mirror shows a distorted image.

I photographed a lot and while partly feeling an urge to capture what I saw I also took these photos so that I would have reminders of what the outside looked like oil case there would suddenly be a lockdown.

I mainly photographed at night because this was often when I would go outside but also when I found the city to be most interesting and empty.

Sometimes I would walk and listen to podcasts or music and not take many photos while other days I would suddenly notice something interesting or beautiful and it reminded me that there was still life and hope even in the midst of the fear and uncertainty of the pandemic.

About the author:

I am a 21 year old photography student from Sweden. I mainly shoot landscapes on black and white 35mm and 120 film.

Photography is important to me because it helps me to understand and appreciate the world around me which otherwise is often very overwhelming because I’m autistic.
