This Best of the year collection began as a simple concept back in 2014 and is now available as Best of the year 2023. To document again the versatility of film photography and the associated creativity of each individual photographer involved. And to once again do justice to the growing importance of film photography in today’s digital age of visual oversaturation. But it has become much more than that: the photo book has become a haunting tribute to the people behind every film image shown: To the courageous companies that are making films again and inspiring our imagination with new movie looks. To the laboratory technicians who make the exposed material visible. To the many medium-sized companies that are still or have recently returned to the analog image world and support us with many small and large film-related tools. And to those people who are either still repairing our old cameras or even starting to build analog cameras again according to old but proven principles.

Behind the concept and its realization is one of them from the mentioned long chain of convinced analogue photographers: Carmencita Film Lab from Valencia, Spain is a laboratory made by photographers for photographers. Together they have created a place where they can entrust their negatives. There are now four of them throughout Spain.

Founder and Managing Director Albert Roig is convinced that the film community will continue to grow. That’s why Carmencita Film Lab not only develops films, but also professionally digitizes them on request. In addition to a store for materials and used cameras, there is also Carmencita Editions. Turning the poetry of analog photography into books, immersing yourself in the world of printing and completing the cycle of an analogue image by putting it back on paper – that is the passion. Best of the year 2023 is a testimony to the fact that this can and must be done again and again.
