Issue 24 of SilvergrainClassics

More Great Film Photography Printed Beautifully

By Charys Schuler / SilvergrainClassics

On SGC’s Issue 24 cover is a photo that fans of ‘80s rock may recognize — it was used for another cover, on the album “A Broken Frame” by Depeche Mode. The photographer was UK’s Brian Griffin, characterized by The Guardian as, “one of the most original and influential photographers of his generation.” This is the second rock album cover we’ve had as a magazine cover — the first was the iconic picture of Queen by Nick Rock.
Issue 24 has a total of 48 pages of great portfolios, including famed formalist Andreas Feininger, whose work of one month in 1942 we explore as an illustration of his principles of photography. Contemporary French photographer Grégoire Huret shows us a very different view — fashion, his passion, on the streets of Paris. (If you’re interested in street photography, check out this article on our blog.)
Mr. Bonzai (David Goggin) of the USA continues the issue’s exploration of the intersection between photography and music. The theme also runs through the abstract works of Germany’s Thomas Wunsch, whose images have been used on jazz albums from artists like Keith Jarrett. Maki Morimoto’s dreamlike art photos show us her colorful visions from Japan. And Argentina’s original power woman, Annemarie Heinrich, started her own business as a refugee of WWII and became a huge influence on the fashion and portrait photography of South America.
There has been a lot of news in the film photography community, including the launch of the Pentax 17, which we tested. (It was especially exciting after having met with Pentax engineer TKO! Story here.) Harman’s new Phoenix color film was released in medium format, which gave its grain a new feeling. And our book review looks at Hollywood on Kodachrome, a collection of interesting information and vivid photos from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
There’s lots more inside Issue 24, including a story of a creative spark which was ignited by using a large format camera to capture familiar surroundings. Rome and Berlin serve as focal points to explore the past and future of Europe’s thriving film photography scene. A wonderful community service project brought together cyanotypes and disadvantaged people in the UK. And in preparation for our upcoming workshop at the North Sea, we have stunning examples of the peaceful patterns of water and sand. There’s much more inside Issue 24, including thoughts on visualizing the final image contained in your photo, and whether and how to crop, from master Bruce Barnbaum. We look at the design icon Agfa Family Super8 system, photographing an eclipse on film, and last but certainly not least, the importance of using calibrated monitors and good color management practices in your digitization process.
