Issue 23 of SGC brings you more great film photography

printed beautifully!

By SilvergrainClassics

We are thrilled to have iconic Magnum photographer Thomas Hoepker’s photo of Muhammad Ali on the cover of Issue 23. Through decades of work, Hoepker captured people and history with a critical eye and cheeky humor. The photos in our portfolio are a mix of iconic shots and never-before published images which were rediscovered while delving through his extensive archives. The second part of our opening portfolio double-header is by Jane Hilton. While Thomas Hoepker’s theme was the world as a whole, Jane Hilton focuses on marginalized and thought-provoking individuals. With her photographs, she brings us closer to those who are different from the norm and dares us to look without prejudice. She doesn’t limit herself to emotional artistic work, but also extends this to her commercial work. This combination of analog photography and commercial work is the subject of Dan Rubin’s observation that, contrary to popular opinion, film-based photography is still competitive in today’s world. It is fast and efficient enough for modern expectations — if you plan in advance and have a great lab as a partner.

Our Virtual Connections author Yvonne Hansen is from Canada, and shares her wonderful photography as well as her experiences running a YouTube channel and workshops with us. Master photographer and darkroom printer Bruce Barnbaum shares the story of getting what he considers his Magnum Opus, Discoveries of a Lifetime, published. Silvergrain Publishing is very proud to have made it possible. Bruce combed through five decades of images to find these, all of which are previously unpublished. At over 350 pages, hardbound, and containing text that is as valuable as the imagery, it is a project we knew needed to be made reality. And we have gear, of course! Marwan El Mozayen shares the last installment of his series about getting a lovely Leica M3 completely serviced in its birthplace — Leica headquarters in Wetzlar.

Young UK photographer Santiago Morgan doesn’t scan, edit, and publish — he dodges and burns in the darkroom! It was a joy to have him share his enthusiasm for traditional printing, as well as his lovely images. Editor-in-Chief Marwan El Mozayen was asked to give a film photography workshop in the Middle East, and was amazed by how much things have changed there. Jane Olin’s dreamy, haunting work is well-known, as is her work with Salon Jane. We are very happy to have had the chance to print her contribution in SilvergrainClassics.

Scanning is so important to today’s film photography! Contributor Hermann Groeneveld shares his new favorite workflow, including hard- and software. Chris Chinnock goes completely the other direction — he makes his own developer with plants he collected locally to use in his community outreach work. And last but certainly not least, the Naked Photographer, a wonderful representative of the analog community on YouTube, has published the results of his test on how temperature affects C-41 development. We also have a blog article about him here.

Issue 23 also has lots more to offer, with our usual balance of portfolios, gear & techniques, and stories from around the world of analog photography! If you’re looking for something specific, why not check out our list of articles here?
